The Davis Ranch Horse Heritage

Davis Ranch has been raising top quality ranch and performance horses for six generations in northern Utah. Titus Davis immigrated to northern Utah in 1863 and started ranching with the finest horses of his day. His son, Thomas Ap Davis, ranched on the Promontory range and followed his father’s tradition by adding to the Davis Ranch remuda any improved stock he could acquire in those early days. Thomas Ap’s son Tom L. Davis, along with his son, Lloyd N. Davis, continued to ranch on the Promontory range until 1941 when Lloyd bought the present day family ranch located just seven miles northwest of Brigham City on Interstate-15. Lloyd used some of the first and finest remount stallions that the government brought into northern Utah. In later years he and his son, Tom A. Davis kept upgrading the ranch stock by breeding to the best of the “New Registered Quarter Horse” stallions that came into the area.

Currently the ranch remains a family owned and operated business that is managed by Tom A. Davis and his sons T. Zane and Clint. They have continued to add and improve the quality of their horses. Their broodmare band now consists of daughters of Smart Little Lena, High Brow Cat, Smart Chic Olena, Gallo Del Cielo, Playgun, Sweet Lil Pepto, Boon Bar, Playin Stylish, Hickorys Indian Pep, Wimpys Little Step, Lil Ruf Peppy, Quanah O Lena, Mister Dual Pep, Peppy San Badger, Dual Rey, Dun It With A Twist, Cats Merada, Blue Spark Olena, Freckles Merada, Colonel Doc Bar Chex, Smart Little Scoot, Docs Hickory, Chic Please, Reminic N Dunit, Lean With Me, Genuine Jeep, Quixote Mac, Starlights Joy, Master Merada, Smartest Little Pep, Blue Duck Okie, Nitro Dual Doc, Boonlight Dancer, Bueno Starlight, and many others.

Each year these mares are bred to Davis Ranch stallions or other popular performance horse sires with cooled/shipped semen. The ranch currently has an embryo transfer program that results in multiple foals from their very best mares. Their foals have been sold to new owners in most states in the United States as well as five different countries around the world.

Clint manages his own training business at the ranch in which he starts young colts raised on the ranch or horses brought to him by customers. He also purchases 3-5 colts at the Fort Worth, Texas, prospect cutting horse sales and sells them as started prospects when they have 6-12 months training. In 2012 two of the NRCHA Open Futurity Finalists were High Roller Rey ridden by Brandon Buttars and Smart N Smokin Rey ridden by Zane P. Davis were started by Clint. Clint charges $750 per month.

When Clint is not riding horses he is helping in the breeding barn where Davis Ranch currently stands sons of Smart Little Lena, High Brow Cat, Dual Rey, Grays Starlight, Shining Spark, Peptoboonsmal, and Boonlight Dancer. In each of the last 5 years, Davis Ranch has bred over 200 mares at the ranch or by cooled/shipped semen. In 2020 Davis Ranch will offer the following 9 stallions to the public for their breeding consideration: Autumnator, High Roller Rey, Black Cat Olena, Starlight Midnight, Blue Spark Olena, Magneticat, Last Hickory Lynx, Royal Blue Lena DR and Smokn Black Starlight.
